Sunday Social: A Blog Worth Writing For (...a failed Mulan reference)

Disclaimer: This is the first post on this here blog to be picture-less. This is monumental. But, intentional. Dig it, kids.

1. What is the first blog you ever followed?
I wish I could tell you. I wish I remembered. But, I don't. Suddenly, my blogging ways have slipped into mindless clicks upon Pinterest pins and zombie-like (how topical) saunters into how-to posts and wacko paleo carb-free clean-eating no-fat no-sugar no-preservatives no-sodium no-flavor recipes. But, I will tell you this. Rachel Schultz is my favorite. Rachel Schultz is my Martha. Rachel Schultz is my Rachael (Ray). Rachel Schultz has no effing clue who I am or that I yearn for her photos and her apartment decorating skills and her ability to make everything pretty and perfect while being a totally normal 20-something all at once.

2. What was your first blog post about?
You guys. I had a LiveJournal. In like... 2006. I don't want to talk about it. But, it was probably some emo (is that still a thing? "Emo" is like the 2010 version of "Goth" and I'm now in my late 20's so I'm probably dwelling in dated-phrases-land) post about some boy I had a crush on that would later turn into Tori Amos-y song lyrics. Oh my God. I said Tori Amos. Let me fix that. Um... Lorde. Sara Bareilles. Pink. Taylor Swift on anti-depressants on a rainy day in walk-of-shame attire in five years.

3. Who left you your first blog comment?
Probably my mom.

4. Who was the first blogger you ever met in person?
My husband and I started a food blog last year and went out for a food blogger meet-up. And I'm not going to lie... we felt totally out of place. I didn't realize "paper straws" were a thing. Also, why is this post sounding like I'm a totally bitter, seasoned, cynical old hag who hates the blogging world? I love it. And you're about to find out why.

5. What was your first “blogging milestone?”
There once was a time that I blogged to exercise my writing muscle. I have now learned that pretty pictures are vital to blogging success, hence my "hair-tossable" super stats (not really but I like to pretend) on my Peach Cobbler post. But, the best thing I have ever written was on February 17, 2009. I have since privatized my old "bigcheex.blogspot.com." But, I have decided to bring this old gem out of the vault and share it with you now. I'm not kidding, kids. I think Tina Fey would be proud of this shiz.

A Beginner's Guide To That's What She Said

In 1992, Mike Myers made an earth-shattering statement that would forever alter the potential for sexual innuendo in everyday conversation. As a frizzy-haired Garth muttered, "Are you done yet? I'm getting tired of holding it" (in reference to an oversized photo of Claudia Schiffer), a quick-witted, holey-jeaned Wayne Campbell responded with: "Yeah. That's what she said."

But, alas, as time pressed onward, "That's what she said" quickly dissipated into the plaid, grungy garb and butterfly clips and orange SNICK couches and WWJD bracelets and Third Eye Blind hits of the nineties. Every now and again, it would manifest itself through casual banter between middle school boys as a mere snicker. It reserved itself for only the true gutter-dwellers and was sometimes replaced by statements such as, "If I had a nickel."

Then, the unthinkable happened. Michael Scott, Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin, induced a new era of double entendre. The "That's What She Said" Renaissance began. Four words. Four words to turn normalcy to vulgarity. To make your colleagues either love you or hate you. To make brilliant mockery of your elders. To make a rainy day GLORIOUS.

Anyone who knows me knows that I view any and every utterance that is remotely venereal as a brilliant opportunity for "That's What She Said." It is my life force. The blood that pumps through my veins is Type TWSS. Because, if you can't turn everything into a sex joke, you're probably living a life that will only end in Valium and regret. As a highly-acclaimed, full-time professional double entendre spotter, I feel it is my personal duty to bestow upon you and all other TWSS novices, my knowledge and experience with this lifestyle. Because it IS, in fact, a lifestyle change you are about to make should you choose to accept it.

You may be asking yourself these questions.

What are the appropriate times and places to say, "That's What She Said"?
Anywhere at anytime. You may want to start out easy: amongst close friends who won't judge you or with drunk, skank ho's who are too inebriated to catch on. As your dexterity increases, move on to colleagues and coworkers. Try restaurants, libraries, nursing homes, churches. The world is at your fingertips. (Everything I just said? ... That's what she said).

Who is "she"?
She's a slut.

What are some examples of "That's What She Said" opportunities?
Ease into it (that's what she said). Start out with obvious ones. Someone says, "Oh, could you just stick that in here?" Or, "That's too big." Or "I'm all wet!" These people are blatantly asking for it. Eventually, you will be meticulous enough to catch on to less conspicuous remarks like, "I had to put it in the trunk" or "Put it in my cup, will ya?" or "I didn't feel anything" or "I'll be down here" "Don't touch that" or "Be done already!"

What if someone is offended by my saying "That's What She Said"?
Job well done.

Can I say "That's What She Said" to children?
Of course. They've gotta learn sometime.

What if I get fired for saying "That's What She Said"?
These are the sacrifices we make for the sake of comedy.

I'm now up to twenty-five "That's What She Said's" an hour. Will it ever stop?
That's what she said. And no. No, it won't.

As you embark on your new day of innuendo catchery, I leave you with this video of every that's what she said from "The Office." Learn from the greats. Let them inspire you. Dwell in the gutter. Dwell long and dwell hard. That's what she said. Hit it.

5 On Friday: We Made It A Full Year, Y'all.

What a WEEK! There has been a lot of working and cooking and loving and working and singing and kissing and hugging and acting and general being.

1. Most importantly, Sunday was our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY! I would be remiss to not make it my first point of praise. :) There were lots of treats (including PUMPKIN SODA that he bought me!) and lots of gooey Facebook posts and lots of staying in bed having a Breaking Bad marathon... Which brings me to my next point.

 2. I know we're late but we just started watching this beautifully stressfully intensely wonderful show. And... oh. my. GOD.
3. I sang at a benefit this week for the Winter Park Playhouse. It was a lovely little way to catch up with old friends and have an excuse to get gussied up and sing for the people. :)

4. Sometimes, I forget I have the best job in the world. I get paid to play with clowns as well as curl my hair. Doesn't get much better than that! And yes, I am a giant. Case in point? See above photo.

5. Pentatonix finally covered my favorite song of the summer. Enjoy.

How was your week?

5 On Friday: Sisters And Hair And Autumn- Oh My.

It's been a glorious week in Whorelando-ville. It rained for three days straight and then faded into a beautiful overcast Friday. I basically hopped off the plane from North Carolina and back into reality. But, a beautiful reality it was. And here's why.

// Twinsies Separated Only By A Decade //
Sunday was my last day in the Carolinas. So, naturally, the sis and I went out with a bang at church and dressed alike. :)

// Carol's Place //
Timothy and I found a new diner called, "Carol's Place."The meatloaf and the open-faced turkey sandwich were bangin'. The veggies? Not. So. Much. If you head here and order a side, be prepared to douse it in salt and/or vinegar and/or pepper and/or anything-that-has-a-flavor. Still, it was a new place to try and we love supporting local eateries.

// New Reads //
I started a new book this week! Chuck Klosterman IV: A Decade of Curious People and Dangerous Ideas. He's one of my favorite authors out there. PLUS- who doesn't love snuggling with their cat while cozying up to a good book on a rainy night?

// Hairstylin' //
It's been a monumental week. I, Candace Neal, hater of all things related to getting ready, actually did things with my hair. Granted, sometimes this is required by my job. Still! My sister taught me how to do a Dutch braid, I got all Pinterest-y and turned my own hair into a headband, and I got my curl on with the good ole styling wand.

// Panera Bread //
They've got Autumn Squash Soup, kids. Do yourself a favor and get. in. on. that.

NC Edition: Five On Fri... Er Saturday (Part II)

Well, kids. It's been an exhilarating week here in my hometown of You-Never-Heard-Of-This-Place, North Carolina. Up until yesterday, the weather was lingering around a perfect 65 degrees and then I think the sun sensed my Floridian presence and scooted the temp up to 82. C'est la vie.

Sans the missing my husband part, this week has been absolutely golden. Visiting with family, reuniting with old (best) friends, talking to teenagers about why they should and shouldn't enter the life of an actor, eating Mama's chili. It doesn't get much better. I'm not entirely sure how I'm supposed to narrow this sweet September vacay down to five things. But, goshdarnit, I'm gonna try.

// Airports //
For about 2 years now, I've been nursing a hefty fear of flying. I'm kindof getting over myself now. The truth is, I could live in an airport. Just don't put me on the plane. On Tuesday morning, I discovered the best cure for plane anxiety: pumpkin spice coffee from Wawa and Tina Fey's book, Bossypants. Oh. Mah. Gawd. Prepare to bust a gut, split a side, laugh out loud, and do a spit take on the passenger to your left. Also, Charlotte likes to greet you with an overpowering wave of Cinnabon spice when you arrive, which is a pleasant way of saying, "We're a great city! Come get fat with us!"

// Friendly Reunions //
Anyone who knows me knows I am distinctly wretched at keeping in touch. I detest talking on the phone. I am a wild homebody (oxymoronic, much?). And I have a huge guilt complex. So, when I havent spoken to you in six months, I assume you are mad at me and I stop making the effort.

But, when I found out my best friend since kindergarten was in the same place I was for the first time in nearly three years, I 'bout flipped a lid. Thusly, the pizza outing and impromptu Krispy Kreme drop-by commenced. Per the request of mi madre, we were able to visit our old high school theatre teacher and give a 2 hour Q & A session to his students. I've done actor workshops before, but these were some of the most wide-eyed, inquisitive young actors I've encountered in a while. And as most youngsters, we were forced politely asked to sing for the class. ;)

// Seesterly Love //
My sister is my rock. Even when we don't chat for weeks, dare I say months (lest we forget my aforementioned communication skills), we can always return to the all familiar state of inside jokes and overall good times.

Taylor and I never take things too seriously as you will see in this series of Vines we took at Target yesterday...

• Halloween Costumes Are Weird This Year
Hot Dog Costume Variations

I love you, Taylor and I love our delightfully strange senses of humor.

// Nostalgia //
Without fail, coming home always takes me back to a simpler (albeit more homework-laden) time. Like, when I'd come home from college on Fall break and sleep for 13 hours at a time, shoulders feeling light as air from completed term papers and daunting exams.

Often, I like to revisit 20-year-old Candace when I'm home. Mama makes her heaping batch of awesome chili. I get to cuddle with James Bond, my first ever college cat (that my parents sweetly adopted when actor life took over). And I totally raid my sister's bathroom and closet and pretend I'm fifteen. You guys! Twilight Woods! Teen deodorant! Prince Brand Hand Salve that I never even knew existed! Totally, for sure!

// iOS 7 //
Kids. iOS 7 has arrived and I am in love. Everyone's got their panties in a wad about how different it is. But, the iPhone overall software look hasn't changed much since its installment in 2007 so I. am. on. board. Plus, their are buckets of new alert and ringtone so I am kindof losing my mind. They're s'cute! In love am I.

This is but a morsel of my glorious week and I look forward to sharing more of my NC exploits with you soon! I'll be back in super hot Florida (husband reunion time!) late tomorrow night. How was YOUR week been, darling people?

5 On Friday: Soccer-y, Pumpkin-y, Tour-y Kindof Week

What a glorious week this has been! Jam-packed with good friends, backstage tours, movies in bed with the hubs, soccer de-virginization (to be explained), thrifting, thrifting, and more thrifting. And as I sit here in the Panera surrounded by high schoolers who either A. work here or B. are sitting in booths flirting with girls through brace-wired teeth, avoiding phone calls from their moms, I am sweetly reminded that I am now a grandma.

But, at least I'm a grandma who still shops at Old Navy and knows at least four popular songs.

Let's recap the glory that is life at the moment:

// Tower of Terror Tour //
One of the (many) perks of working at Walt Disney World are VIP tours. On Tuesday, my co-workers and I got an exclusive tour of Disney's Tower of Terror ride which is ALSO where Timothy and I got engaged. It's kindof the best ride on the whole planet and this tour was filled to the brim with cool trivia and interesting backstories. And of course, who wants to tour this ride and note ride it? So, after a few screams and shrieks, we called it a day. Perfection.

// Orlando City Soccer //
You guys, I've never particularly cared for soccer. Let's be honest, I just plain didn't like it. So, if you had asked me two weeks ago if I would have ended up decked out in Orlando City colors screaming among super fans dressed like moon men, cheering with the "Ruckus" supporter crowd, I would have scoffed at you. Rudely. Some of our couples friends invited us out and I'll be darn-tootin' if it wasn't one of the best things I've done in Orlando. Championship game TOMORROW NIGHT! Raaaaahhhhh!

// Pumpkin-y Things //
It's Fall! Everything is turning into a pumpkin (which contrary to Cinderella's opinion on the matter, is actually a GOOD thing)! I finally got my first pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks. A word about the pumpkin spice M&M's: They do NOT taste like pumpkin. They do not taste like anything different from a regular chocolate M&M. Fail. Big fail. Bigger disappointment.

// Pita Oven //
I stumbled upon a hole in the wall Greek fast food joint this week and died over their falafel. Seriously, if you're in the area- get in on Pita Oven.

// Victrola 78's Score //
Last year at our engagement party, my amazing aunt and uncle gave us the most beautiful (WORKING) Victrola from- wait for it- 1912! I can't believe we have something over 100 years old in our little undeserving apartment. Regardless, it's not always easy to find records for this puppy until I struck gold at a thrift store yesterday. We had such a romantic evening last night listening to awesome old school songs while it stormed out. Siiiiigh.

How has YOUR week been?

Sunday Social: Hey, September. How you doin'?

AHHHH! We've reached SEPTEMBER at long, long last! I thought I'd never make it through the fiery hot, humid oven that is Florida in the summer time. Sure, I still have another two months to withstand the unwavering heat before it even begins to cool down; but, now I can do it while sipping on something with pumpkin in it! Time to reflect on the glorious summer.

// What was your favorite trip/vacation/activity this summer? //
Definitely one of the best things that happened this summer was the hub's birthday gift to me: The Wild Africa Trek at Disney's Animal Kingdom. An amazing experience. Plus, it was totally a VIP exclusive kindof deal so I felt all fancy.

// What was your favorite outfit look/clothing item of the summer? //
I'm usually a green gal but I'd have to say my new blue Old Navy dress (thanks for the gift card, Mom and Dad!) with matching blue shoes (thanks, Mama!). And apparently, I refuse to let you see it in an unobstructed manner.

// What is one thing you wish you’d gotten to do this summer? //
Go out of town. We live in a place where everyone vacations. It gets a little old seeing EVERYONE else having glorious relaxing fun on vacation while we work our butts off. This would have been a nice getaway...

And let's be honest... I don't even know where this place is. I found it on Pinterest. And it looks like a super cozy antithesis to my current residence.

// What was your favorite song of the summer? //
I really do want to say, "Blurred Lines" because, yes, it ate me up like a hungry, hungry hippo. As did P!nk's "Just Give Me A Reason." But, I'ma hafta go with "Royals" by Lorde on this one.

// What was your favorite movie/tv show of the summer? //
Hands down, Orange Is The New Black. Best acting I've seen since Michael Scott left The Office and all was cold and desolate in the world. Seriously. Watch this show, people. Do it.

How were your summers?

My First Foodie Pen Pals! August Edition

I have been so, so excited to share this and could barely wait until now to do so! This was my first foray into the land of Foodie Pen Pals and I was so very fortunate to receive the darling Kimberly as my amazing and wonderful pal. She sent me the most delicious, delectable, tasty, decadent (other synonyms for yumtastic) goodies from her Virginia town and I couldn't have been more tickled pink.

You guys, look how excited the cat was (He actually looks really threatening in this picture... he was truly just yawning...). So, thank you to the lovely and delightful Kimberly for going to the trouble to hit up the local farmer's market for and make this such a fun experience!

Among the goodies?
1. Butter Toasted Peanuts: Oh. Mah. Gawd. Get up in my mouth. I think Timothy and I inhaled these in a minute.
2. Salted VA Peanuts: A classic delight.
3. Gummy Bears: Because I am a gummy fiend. And these were perfectly plump and sweet for my sad addiction.

4. Virginia Apple Butter: How did she know my affinity for this stuff?! This. Is. Amazing. And perfect for the fast approaching Fall.

5. Butter Brown Snickerdoodles: The grand finale! These were AMAZING. Holy bee-joe-lee. We even shared these with friends and bragged about Kim's brilliance. If you want to taste all of the greatness we did, she adapted the recipe from the Ambitious Kitchen.

Thank you so much again, Kimberly and Lindsay from the Lean Green Bean for this brilliant exchange. Can't wait to do it again! :)

Our Apartment: Gallery Therapy

Saturday was a day off and thus a day for a little apartment updo action. Pinterest of course has had me swooning over all of the different ways to adorn your home in photos so I had to give this and this a go.

This is how they looked on Pinterest:

And this is how they look in our little apartment!

I scored this shelf for just a few bucks at Salvation Army. Additionally, we have lots of pictures of ourselves because we apparently have no friends. This made a nice addition to our tiny hallway.

Backstory on the above photos: Ever since Timothy and I started dating, I always give him a framed minimalist movie poster when any sort of holiday or birthday rolls around. It has become a bit of a tradition for us and now a nice way to personalize our space with a little gallery wall! If you don't know about the minimalist movie poster revolution, get in on this mess.

What pictures are you showcasing in your space?

Tiny Changes (Week 8)

Another week of my Tiny Changes Challenge, done! The challenge last week? A second attempt at following a cleaning schedule. It kindof happened. I mean, I can say the bed was made every day. The laundry was done every day. The dishes were done every day. The counter tops were wiped down every day. As far as the whole vacuum on this day and clean the toilet on this day: it just ain't happenin'. I will save all of that rat-a-tat-crap for a Spring cleaning overhaul day when we have guests coming over. And yes, I just said "rat-a-tat-crap" because I'm apparently a 67 year old Jewish man making up nonsense terms to convey my outrage.

So, let's move on.

My tiny change challenge for this week: To drink water.

I have been avoiding this, friends. Water bores my face off. Back when I was a youthful, agile 21 year old living on the mountaintops of Colorado, I biked and ran daily with a Camelback back pack perpetually strapped to my shoulders like some weirdo lifelong H20 IV. Constantly sucking that (flavorless) stuff down like it was some super-power-fueling Kool-Aid. And now, I am at a cynical 27 and I want my coffee and my Diet Coke and my OJ (I live in Florida... you can't even enter the state without them forcing this stuff down your throat) and I want it right now, dagnabbit! #selfcensoring

But, I figure I need to toss in the towel and just drink that recommended amount (what is it again? Googling it...) so I can feel healthier and lose weight and maybe add a few years to my life. :)

So, there it is. I resolve to drink my recommended daily amount of water. Boom.

Ps- Look at this woman totally faking that she likes water...

As always, here's the meal plan for the week! :)

Recipes To Try This Week:
SUNDAY: VMA Party with friends. Sausage balls and guacamole. Healthy! ;)
MONDAY: It's the hubs day off. He cooks and he's always got a surprise up his sleeve.
TUESDAY: Cheesy Stuffed Meatball Sliders
WEDNESDAY: Bistro Europa
THURSDAY: Black And White Chicken Chili
FRIDAY: Crock Pot Split Pea Soup
SATURDAY: Roasted Corn Caesar Salad
I use Ziplist to keep my recipes and shopping list in order and so should you! :)

Sunday Social: Childhoodom

Happy Sunday, beautiful people! Hope you are all enjoying your weekend! I'm still scratching my head as to why I thought it was a good idea to expose my husband to the film, "Closer." Hey, honey! Let's have a romantic home cooked dinner and watch a movie allllll about CHEATING! Yay! Good one, Candace.
// What do you miss most about being a kid? //
Being fearless. Sure, maybe I was afraid of what was under the bed. But, that's way better than my current state of fear: cancer, car wrecks, rapists, unemployment, and terrorism. I have many more than that but I shirk at letting you on to the crazy hypochondriac anxiety-prone scaredy cat that is Candace.
Also, this:
// Did you have a nickname growing up? What was it? //
People always assumed "Candy" was a fitting thing to call me. But, aside from my high school theatre teacher who actually made it sound endearing, I always thought it made me sound brainless or like a stripper. To this day, "Kansas" happens. And "Can" is common. Sometimes, I get called "Canned Ace" a la my Twitter handle. So, the moral of this story is: "Meh, call me whatever you want. I'll probably respond." Tee hee.
// What was your favorite thing to do at recess? //
Um, be a friggin' POWER RANGER. HELLO! I was always the Yellow one because all of the other girls wanted to be Kimberly. And I'm not even close to Asian so, what is happening...
// What did you want to be when you grew up? //
I flirted with the idea of meteorology (NERD) and veterinarian (BUMP that noise) and pop star (suck it, Taylor Swift!), but I always wanted to be an actress/ singer. Happy to say, DID IT! Doing it! Loving it! :)
Can't you see? I am just LIIIIIVING in this photo.
// Did you participate in any school activities? //
Oh Lord. Drama Club, y'all. Beta Club. Odyssey of the Mind. Thespians' Society. Junior Marshall. A brief stint in the History Club until I realized I didn't even be knowin' nothin' about no Civil War. And in college, Alpha Psi (Vice President, whaaat!), Phi Epsilon Honor Society, Alpha Chi Honor Society. Ladies and gentleman, I call that monologue: "The Goody Two Shoes Theatre Kid You Always Made Fun Of."
// What is the funniest thing you did as a kid that your parents still remind you about? //
My parents asked me if Michael Jackson was a boy or a girl and, with stone cold sincerity, I replied, "She's a boy."
I still consider my logic on this topic utterly flawless.
How about you?

Our Wedding: The Reception

Our reception was perfectly simple. Nothing fancy. Nothing over the top gawdy. Sweet, homespun, personal.
I knew I wanted my father to speak. And as predicted, he had the whole place in tears. His words were so powerfully poignant, I tell you!

As I always say around here, my favorite thing to do is celebrate Timothy's Greek heritage and my Southern heritage. So, naturally we had Greek mints and Cackalacky BBQ sauce (my mom's brilliant idea) as favors for our guests. For those of you who don't know, "Cackalacky" is a nickname us Carolinians call our states. :)
To close out the evening, per the request of our family, we sang some Beatles "Something In The Way She Move."

Have any fun reception stories from your wedding?

Tiny Changes (Week 7)

I survived another week of my Tiny Changes Challenge! The challenge last week? To start following a cleaning schedule so our busy lives don't turn our apartment into a hot mess. Y'all. I did not even come close to making this happen.

Not even going to lie.

And I could.

Because this is my blog.

But, I did take responsibility all day on Saturday in a litter box emptying/ sweeping/ mopping/ vaccuming/ counter-wiping whirlwind of a frenzy. So, before I move forth in tackling another tiny change, let's try this again shall we?

MEAL PLAN FOR THIS WEEK
My husband can pull meals out of his culinarily gifted arse. I, the sad pathetic wannabe cook, have to use recipes. Here are some that I'd like to give a go this week based on what's on sale.
